Trip to Mae Sai: Day One

Just 9 days before little baby is due, we decided to take a road trip up to Northern Thailand. We had some friends and partners that we needed to visit, and it seemed like a good time since we are just waiting around for the birth of the baby. So we rented a car and hit the road for 2 days.

We decided to take our time, and we turned a 3-4 hour drive into a 5-6 hour road trip. I was amazingly comfortable almost the whole time we were gone. Thankfully little Abigail was (mostly) happy to have her own car seat--this is the longest she has ever sat in one since we don't have them back home. Here she is eating breakfast in the car:

Driving on the left side of the road:
After stopping for lunch, bathroom breaks, buying fruit for our hosts breaks, and buying candy bar breaks, we were almost there!
The directions we got said that we would be on a dirt road for a while before we got to our friends' house. We drove on a really muddy road in the rain for a while, and by the time we realized that our little rental car would not make it through any more mud puddles, we found that we had missed the turn to their house. Thankfully we didn't do (much) damage to our rental car, at least none that they noticed when we returned the car! Here we are on the mud road, trying to decide if we should turn around. The answer was yes:
You can't really tell from the picture, but the muddy water was a foot deep in some places. We finally made it to see our friends and tour their agricultural training center. It was great to be able to connect with them and spend some time with them in their home. Abigail had a lot of fun playing with their grandson, and eating some wonderful home-cooked Thai food.

More adventures to come tomorrow!
