When we first moved into our apartment, we were told that
the landlord had been “promising” to install internet for at least a few
years. But it hadn’t happened
yet. It was the classic example in
this culture of someone telling you “yes” but having no intention of following
through. So we just accepted that
we would probably never have internet access at home.
But then, after a few months, we discovered that a company
on the floor below us had an unprotected wireless signal. I don’t know if they realized that
there was no password required….but we suddenly had FREE WIFI!!! Well, between the hours of 9 AM and 6
PM during the week, unless it was a holiday or weekend or they just felt like
leaving work early at 2 PM. Even
with the inconveniences, we were so grateful for that signal.
But then last week, our landlord stopped by. He had recently paid the enormous fee
to have internet installed in his own apartment. They were paying a whole lot of money so that their son
could have internet access. But
the problem was, even though they were paying a lot of money, they were on the
“limited plan.” Once you used up
your 5 GB each month, you had no more internet for the rest of the month. So…..the landlord had this great
idea. What if he upgrades to the
unlimited access plan, and then runs a cable up to our apartment so we can
share the internet access, and the cost?
What a great idea!
He came by tonight to set it up. And now we have internet that is faster than I have
experienced in the last year and a half of living here. And we can Skype on the weekends, and
on holidays, and at night! It’s
amazing!
So. I realize
that having internet should not be my top priority in life. But…..it’s still really nice!
