This week we had a little visit from our former house helper, A Zhen. A Zhen worked for us from November 2009 until last July. She is a local sister who grew up in a village just outside our town.
We enjoyed having her over to our house to visit. Sadly, Abigail didn't really remember A Zhen so it took a while for her to warm up to her. The last several months, A Zhen has been working in a factory on the east coast. It is almost like a rite for passage here for young people to "da gong"--go to the other side of the country and work for a year or two. For teenagers who don't go to college, it can happen anytime in their late teens to early twenties. Last week, A Zhen got a call that her grandmother was very sick, so she made the 3 day journey home just in time for her grandmother's funeral. We were sad for the circumstances that brought her home, but we were grateful to be able to see her again before we leave for the States.
