Progress

Today I showed my house helper to make a simple BBQ sauce to pour over chicken that I had cooking in the crockpot.  I thought it would be fun (and maybe a little humiliating) to give you an idea of how that conversation went.  Obviously I wrote the conversation out in English, but just pretend it’s in another language :)  Now you can just imagine what my life is like every day.

Kelly:  (picks up ketchup bottle)  What do you call this?
Nan Nan:  Ketchup
Kelly:  Ketchup?
Nan Nan:  Yes.
Kelly:  Ok, ketchup.  2 cups……(picks up vinegar)  What do you call this?
Nan Nan:  Vinegar.
Kelly:  Vinegar?  (takes 2 minutes to try and write it down, then has Nan Nan write it for me) Vinegar.  How do you say?  (Holds up 1/3 measuring cup).  Two.
Kelly:  (picks up brown sugar)  What do you call this?
Nan Nan:  Brown sugar.
Kelly:  Brown sugar.  1 cup.  Put.  (I have just remembered how to say put.)  Put 1 cup brown sugar.

Kelly:  (start stirring it up)  How do you say this?  I am……
Nan Nan:  Stir.
Kelly:  I stir.  You stir.  Stir.
Kelly:  Pour.

Nan Nan:  How many pieces of chicken are there?
Kelly:  (confused look).  Chicken?
Nan Nan:  How many pieces of chicken are there?
Kelly:  (confused look)  ………Oh!  6 pieces.

Nan Nan:  How do you cook the chicken?
Kelly:  Chicken…cook (confused look)?
Nan Nan:  How do you cook the chicken?
Kelly:  Oh!  (points to crockpot)  This.
Nan Nan:  Do you put oil?
Kelly:  Oil, oil…..oh, oil!  No.  I do not put oil.  I put Coke.  Cook 6 hours.  Pour this.  Cook 2 hours.  Finished.

**This is an actual conversation I had today.  Yes, it is much more than I could say a month ago.  But it is still so sad!
